  1. VAT (value-added tax) is the tax on goods and 
  2. services. VAT is imposed by the European 
  3. Community on member states. The tax varies 
  4. from state to state. An agreed proportion of 
  5. the tax money is used to fund the EC. VAT is 
  6. applied at each stage of the production of a 
  7. commodity, and it is charged only on the 
  8. value added at that stage.
